House of gold . . .

Mary Introduction
Mary's Litany

Gold is the most precious and prized of metals.  Scripture describes objects made of gold as the most valuable and worthy of respect and reverence.

Because of Mary's unique perfections, and recipient of God's favors, graces, virtues, innocence, and purity, she  has been so favored above and beyond all that is earthly that she is described as not only as golden, but a house of gold.  In Mary dwelt a Divine Person who received from her his human life, and found in her the most perfect dwelling in which to grow, be nourished, and be protected.

Mary's body housed the Son of God in which his human nature grew and was nourished.  Mary is our House of Gold.  She desires to draw us closer to her Son, to be nourished by her love and strengthened in his life.  As our mother she is solicitous that we grow in his love.  The favors Mary asks of him for our welfare can never be refused.

The devotion to the holy virgin is delicious, sweet, nourishing.  When we talk on earthly subjects or politics, we grow weary; but when we talk of the holy virgin, it is always new. (1)  St. John Vianney

Our Lord, O most holy Virgin, has exalted you to such a degree that by his favor all things that are possible to him should be possible to you.   (2)  St. Anselm

As all in the temple was covered with gold, so was everything in the beautiful soul of Mary filled with sanctity.

(3)  St. Thomas

Mary was the house of gold which Eternal Wisdom, that is, the divine Word, chose for his dwelling on earth: Wisdom hath built herself a house. (4)  St. Alphonsus de Liguori

That House of God is so rich that it can relieve all our wants. (5)  Richard of St. Laurence

O Mary, you love God so much, and therefore you desire to see loved by all.  This is the grace which above all others I ask of you, and which I hope from you. (6)  St. Alphonsus de Liguori

This child being, then, destined to become the Mother of the Eternal Word, God enriched her with so great grace, that in the first moment of her Immaculate Conception her sanctity exceeded that of all the saints and angels together, for she received grace of a higher order - one that corresponded to the dignity of Mother of God. (7)  St. Alphonsus de Liguori

Blessed are they who know you, O Mother of God, for the knowledge of you is the high road to everlasting life, and the publication of your virtues is the way of eternal salvation. (8)  St. Bonaventure

Before conceiving the Lord in her body she had already conceived him in her soul.  She had made room for the Lord in her soul and thus really became the true Temple where God made himself incarnate, where he became present on this earth.

(9)  Benedict XVI, pope

The name of Mary contains the brilliance of the virtues, the sweet refulgence of modesty and the sacrifice pleasing to God.  It is the sign of hospitality and the center of holiness. (10)  St. Francis Xavier
